Professor and Director, Data Science Institute

University of Virginia

Job Description

Stephenson Professor and Director of the Data Science Institute

The University of Virginia seeks a distinguished scholar for the Stephenson Professor and Director of the Data Science Institute (DSI). In this role, the Stephenson chair will lead and engage faculty across Grounds in strategic, pan-University research efforts, which encompass the diverse knowledge areas of Data Science, and also will be responsible for leading the continued growth and development of DSI. The breadth of UVa's schools and the existing Data Science Institute provide the basis for an institute which aspires to be a world-leader in Data Science research, scholarship, and education.

The Stephenson Professor will step into the role at a time of significant momentum, as the DSI enters its fourth year as the first pan-university research center at UVA. The DSI is an interdisciplinary unit reporting to the provost. It currently coordinates and directs research in data science across a full range of scientific, engineering, health (both nursing and medicine), business, education, legal, and other disciplines, and it coordinates the efforts of six active affiliated centers (Center for Automata Processing; Center for Big Data Ethics, Law, and Policy; Center for Information Engineering and Analytics; Center for Large-Scale Computational Modeling; Center for Leadership, Simulation, and Gaming; and the Center for the Study of Data and Knowledge). The Institute works collaboratively with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of Sponsored Programs to advance research initiatives and facilitate the organization of interdisciplinary teams and the submission of data-driven cross-disciplinary proposals. The Institute also supports the development and implementation of research intelligence tools to expand the research infrastructure and facilitate collaborative discovery and interdisciplinary research. The current governance structure for DSI includes a Data Science Board that consists of executives from industry and government and a steering committee of faculty from seven schools.

As DSI Director, the Stephenson Professor will also continue to oversee the DSI's Master's of Science in Data Science and identify additional educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. DSI also offers and plans expansion of continuing educational programs for governmental and corporate partners. To learn more about the Data Science Institute, please visit http://dsi.virginia.edu/.

  • Create, articulate, and implement a vision for data science research, which builds on the strengths and activities of the University's schools and colleges.
  • Manage, grow, and promote educational opportunities in data science.
  • Oversee the quality, conduct, administration, planning, and development of all DSI activities.

Nominations, expressions of interest, and applications (including a single page cover letter and CV) should be submitted via email to mhurst@virginia.edu.

Review of applications is expected to begin in early February and review of applicants will continue until the position is filled.
