Data Science Programs Manager

Reporting to the Director of Engaged Learning, the Data Science Programs Manager designs and manages a portfolio of civic and corporate data educational engagement programs that advance the development of information analysis and data science students' professional interests through high-impact skill development opportunities.
This role is in charge of developing strong working partnerships and relationships with data-oriented organizations and project-based learning contacts, relevant partner institutions, School of Information faculty and administration, and data-oriented constituents across campus. The Data Scientist will collaborate with the ELO's external engagement staff to help identify potential project partner organizations; and develop, refine, and scope data science projects for UMSI courses and programs. Finally, this role provides coaching and guidance to students and student organizations working in ELO and UMSI programs concerning information analysis and data science work while acknowledging the broader goals of the Engaged Learning Office. This position may also contribute to internal ELO data-oriented processes.

This position has the potential for additional duties as a lecturer in UMSI data courses. This lecturer position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Responsibilities*
Program Development and Management - 70%
The Data Science Programs Manager develops, manages, and facilitates data-oriented programs and initiatives for the School and works to enhance educational outcomes in civic engagement, ethical reasoning, and collaboration for all UMSI students.
- Define and manage all aspects of engaged learning data programs, including program learning objectives, curriculum, student recruitment, project-partner relationship development, project development, advising, program development, and post-program evaluation and assessment.
- Contribute to developing and maintaining formal partnerships with internal and external relevant data organizations such as MIDAS, DataKind, and Data for Social Good. Cultivate, implement, and manage partnership and cooperative agreements in alignment with the School of Information and ELO strategic priorities.
- Represent the School of Information at a variety of civic and engaged learning data educators groups, professional associations, and other UM-related networks.
- Provide guidance for information analysis and data science students' participation in other UMSI engaged learning programs and courses as needed.
- Contribute to the development of civic and corporate data projects for UMSI client-based courses.
- Develop and facilitate engaged learning data-oriented workshops and programming for graduate and undergraduate students, in collaboration with ELO team members and other colleagues at the School of Information and the University.
Engaged Learning Office Programming and Initiatives - 20%
The Data Science Programs Manager will also contribute to the success of the greater ELO team as a multifaceted team member.
- Enhance and develop new synergies between existing ELO programs and relationships.
- Contribute to the success of Engaged Learning Office programs and infrastructure through collaboration with ELO team members on various ELO programming, workshops, and initiatives.
- Participate in department- and office-level strategic planning; data collection, management, and analysis; and marketing and communications activities while leveraging operational and program management software and tools, unit-level assessment activities, temp staffing management, and other operational activities.
Service, Learning and Professional Development- 10%
- Support the mission and goals of the school and the strategic priorities of the Dean.
- Serve on school, university or professional organization committees/boards.
- Invest in individual commitments to support diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Participate in a variety of professional development activities, including maintaining any required professional certification or licensure.
Required Qualifications*
- Master's Degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, social science, epidemiology, engineering, or other relevant quantitative field with some coursework in data science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of two years of work experience in or related to data science or similar work environment.
- Project and program management experience, including the management of multiple projects at one time.
- Experience with managing data in complex databases, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products and Google Drive programs.
- Experience mentoring or developing students/student groups (or similar).
- Experience participating in, leading, or designing engaged learning, active learning, or high impact experiences, including curriculum development and program management.
