The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Analytics, the Senior Data Analytics Developer works to analyze, design, code, test, and implement systematic solutions to meet requirements. They will provide general support to maintain solutions that meet the service levels, system availability, performance, and quality levels required by our customers.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Enhance ETL processes as needed to support additional report data or criteria
  • Collaborate with project teams on new builds to determine the correct logging procedures to ensure solid reporting; coordinate logging implementation and testing prior to launch
  • Improve and maintain the day-to-day (and monthly) operations of the Analytics environment, including performance, scalability and cost.
  • Maintain documentation for all client reporting, including COUNTER reports, Publisher reports, Power BI reports, ad hoc reports, etc.
  • Work with internal and external client representatives to determine business requirements for new reports; deliver solutions that meet or exceed expectations
  • Code, test, and troubleshoot utilizing the appropriate hardware, database, and programming technology
  • Contribute to the analysis of functional requirements 
  • Determine level of effort for new development
  • Display your passion for quality and writing clean and robust code that scales and performs well
  • Analyze performance and take action to correct deficiencies based on consultation with users, supervisor, and other project team members
  • Problem-solve and think laterally as part of a team, or individually, to meet the needs of the project
  • Understand expectations that were set with client and recognize when issues/events may affect delivery
  • Adopt, embrace and promote agile practices with your peers
  • Understand standard systems development lifecycle processes and apply our methodologies effectively on client engagements

  • Know and understand the full solution and consider the effect changes may have on it; use techniques such as defensive coding and error handling
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to meet the needs of the team and department, and to support Silverchair's business needs

What You Need To Bring

Qualified candidates will bring demonstrated proficiency with data warehousing and data modeling (relational, dimensional).  They must be an effective communicator, and have the knowledge and ability to work with all kinds of data, to include relational databases, files, xml, no sql, and others.  Successful candidates will have the desire to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, the ability to quickly learn and effectively apply new technologies and concepts, and the initiative to excel in a high-performance work culture.

Preferred Skills / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related degree, lower degrees must be supplemented with additional relevant experience
  • 6 or more years’ experience with SQL server (or another relational database) and ETL Analytics Platform (Pentaho a plus)
  • 6 or more years’ experience with reporting (business objects, SSRS, etc.)
  • 6 or more years’ experience in Database and/or System Administration, data manipulation, and forensic analysis of data is preferred
  • Proficient in the use of version control
  • Knowledge in creating, reading and understanding technical designs; ability to create action items from the designs
  • ETL patterns. In particular, techniques to efficiently maintain dimension tables
  • Demonstrated ability to explain high level foundational data warehouse concepts (rudimentary familiarity with the Kimball method or similar)
  • Understanding of why RBAR (Row By Agonizing Row) is an anti-pattern and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of how to avoid it
  • Experience participating in the design of analytics schema design 
  • Preferably some in-memory analytics experience (Power BI, Tableau, QlikView, etc.)

Patrick Sullivan, Director of Analytics, joined Silverchair over 8 years ago as a Client Services Analyst. Since then, he has held several titles including Developer, Architect, DevOps Team Lead, and now leads the analytics department. Patrick is a self-taught technologist and lifelong learner. He is passionate not only about products and technology, but also people and culture. As a servant leader, he trusts his team members’ knowledge and ability and takes a support and upgrade approach to leading his team. Outside of Silverchair, Patrick is a craft beer enthusiast, having recently brewed a collab beer with Three Notch’d Brewing! He loves taking in the various restaurants, breweries, music, and art venues in Charlottesville about as much as he enjoys escaping to the mountains of our local National Parks to relax and recharge.
