Job Description

Forward-thinking technology consulting firm is seeking an Entry-Level Data Scientist to perform tasks for an existing data science program.  You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that’s responsible for the full data life cycle, from conception to deployment.

In this role, you should be highly analytical with a knack for analysis, math and statistics. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for interpreting data.

Entry-level Data Scientist responsibilities include:

  • Performing interviews with Subject Matter Experts (SME) such as librarians, scientists, and administrators to gather requirements. Applying knowledge and selecting appropriate data sources and tools to meet the requirements
  • Using agile, iterative approaches to develop detailed planning documents for several specific data analytics projects.  Establishing what data reformatting and manipulation will be needed to address project needs and plan the analysis, visualization, interpretation, and presentation approaches.
  • Obtaining approval for detailed planning documents via consultation with (SME)
  • Conducting progress updates for each analysis project based on agreed upon planning schedule
  1. Provide regular updates on project progress.
  2. In consultation with SMEs, modify and update plan document as needed if plan changes.
  3. Document methods and capture all code, data, and metadata throughout the project
  4. Produce planned outputs and outcomes, such as a Data Story, Data Publication, and Presentation.
  • Attending regular Data Science team meetings in order to gain appropriate context for analyses, gain feedback on approaches, and provide feedback to other team members.
  • Recommending data management system and curation process improvements so that the team can better support data science activities in the future, such as improvements to application programming interfaces, data descriptions, and data quality

Entry-level Data Scientist requirements include:

  • Proven 1-2 years of experience as a Data Scientist or Data Analyst
  • Experience in non-bibliographic, bibliographic, and domain specific metadata and associated controlled vocabularies (thesauri) and content. Includes but may not be restricted to:
  • Experience with Project Open Data 1.1 (compatible with DCAT) and ISO 19115, NAL Thesaurus and other resources
  • Experience with open source catalog and repository software platforms and their Application Programming Interfaces. Includes but may not be restricted to DKAN Science, PubAg, Scholix, Dimension, Elements.
  • Experience with scientific and web and business analytics tools such as R, Jupyter Notebooks, OpenRefine, Tableau, D3, ArcGIS, Story Maps, Cogito, Angelfish
  • Experience with programming, query, and markup languages such as XML, HTML, Python, SQL
  • Problem-solving aptitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Must be U.S Citizen or have H1-B Visa
  • BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering or relevant field; graduate degree or certificate in Data Science,  or other quantitative field is a plus
