Currently, we are seeking a talented Sr. Data Engineer to join the Retirement Solutions Division (RSD) based Newport Beach, California.  The Retirement Solutions Division leverages its strengths in product development, technology, services and risk management to create retirement solutions for individuals, families, and businesses. With the guidance of financial professionals, customers have access to an array of annuities and mutual funds designed to help grow assets and to provide retirement income for financial independence.

The Analytics Center of Enablement within Pacific Life Retirement Solutions Division supports the data driven needs of our partners with high quality solutions to improve customer experience and business value.  The Data Engineering role will lead in building analytical pipelines that automate data flows and predictive or prescriptive algorithms. The associate will perform data analysis, partner with our business on the application of these data sets to solve business problems, and optimize the storage of this data to support these pipelines.

The ideal candidate relishes working with large volumes of data, enjoys the challenge of highly complex technical contexts, and, above all else, is passionate about data and analytics. He/she is an expert with data modeling, ETL design and business intelligence tools and passionately partners with the business to identify strategic opportunities where improvements in data infrastructure creates outsized business impact. He/she is a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, able to think big (while paying careful attention to detail) and enjoys working in a fast-paced team. The ideal candidate need to possess exceptional technical expertise in large scale data pipelines, BI systems with hands-on knowledge of SQL, Distributed/MPP data storage, Hadoop and AWS services.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the discovery and capture of data requirements from business stakeholders and technology partners, performs data analysis, and creates high level data designs for information solutions (25%)
  • Participates in the development, testing, and implementation of data delivery and machine learning pipelines, by translating business data and non-functional requirements into working code (25%)
  • Analyzes, interprets, and visualizes data to help users meet complex reporting and analytical business needs for requests from senior business stakeholders or other technology areas (15%)
  • Provides support for production releases and incidents involving information solutions, with increasingly complex components and dependencies (5%)
  • Advises and trains business users on effective use of available data, tools, and usage techniques (5%)
  • Implements data structures using best practices in data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, SQL, Redshift, and other data capabilities (15%)
  • Stays connected to cross industry data engineering thought leadership, synthesizes key concepts and drives practical adoption within Pacific Life (10%)

 
FACTORS FOR SUCCESS

  • 8+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, BI Engineer, Business/Financial Analyst or Systems Analyst in a company with large, complex data sources.
  • Experience building/operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets
  • Experience working with AWS big data technologies (EMR, Redshift, S3)
  • Experience with big data platforms like Hadoop
  • Experience with unstructured and streaming data
  • Demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing
  • Proven success in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements, describe data modeling decisions and data engineering strategy
  • Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring other engineers for best practices on data engineering
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Financial services industry experience a plus
