Job Description

The National Association of Manufacturers is seeking an experienced Director, Research and Data Mining to be a part of its dynamic and responsive DC-based membership team. The Director, Director, Research and Data Mining is an exempt level position reporting to the VP, Membership. The position responsibilities include the following:

SUMMARY:  The position envisions, executes, and oversees the processes necessary to deliver exceptional quality data regarding NAM members and prospects to Membership, while assisting and collaborating with other departments across the organization on meeting their related data needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Source, explore, develop, test, and mine sources of data to assist the NAM’s membership efforts in both sales and retention. Expand the number and diversity of data sources – both free and commercial – in ways that provide measurable improvements in data depth, quality, and usability.  Work closely with external and internal technical resources to ensure successful data imports and integrations. (40%)
  • Coordinate with other internal staff to determine overlapping needs for prospect and/or member data and how those needs can be satisfied efficiently and economically.  Strive to build ongoing processes that help ensure the quality and relevance of the broader data streams over time.  When necessary, provide data for specific marketing projects or communication pieces, such as the NAM's annual report, marketing letters, surveys and brochures. (20%)
  • Ensure that the data necessary for targeted mailings, sales and retention campaigns is readily available and reliable.  Identify and advocate for the tools necessary to allow the NAM’s key data consumers to identify and retrieve this data themselves whenever possible. (15%)
  • Manage identification of and subscription to the tools and sources necessary to track and report industry trends, profitable industries, IPOs and M&A transactions, and other important events or data points to the Field Division in order to facilitate the relevant sales and retention actions. (10%)
  • Track all director commitment activity for retention and dues increases. (10%)
  • Perform other duties to assist sales team when necessary, such as helping with PowerPoint presentations, letter merging and mailings or other special projects. (5%)

Type and Purpose of Contacts

Internally: Headquarters (policy, public affairs, marketing and member services departments) and field staff to discuss issue impact, explore data needs and cross-reference opportunities, and provide sales tools; NAM leadership to seek assistance with major prospects and member companies for dues increases, member involvement or retention.

Externally: Prospect and member companies to obtain or verify information.  Data vendors, service providers, and partners to ensure capabilities and results.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises jointly the Research Assistant

Degree of Supervision Received: Minimal on day-to-day activities, though work is reviewed closely by other staff.

Examples of Decision Making

On own authority: How to identify data needs, test assumptions and sources, perform research, run reports and present findings; how to work effectively with key representatives in other departments to identify overlapping and related data needs; how to coordinate research activities with division staff.

With approval of higher authority: Contracting with a data vendor or other third party service provider; Assignment of prospects to sales team; major changes to data or company information.

Education and/or Experience                                             

  • College degree (preferably in marketing, business, finance); five to eight years’ experience in research and database management

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of database structure, Transact-SQL Skills a significant plus
  • Working knowledge of prospect sales and lead generation systems
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative and organizational skills
  • Strong skills in project management and presentations
  • Strong communication skills- oral and written
  • Good judgment
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to learn the NAM's database
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to handle pressure in a deadline driven environment
