Job Description

Summary

The Director of Data Strategy and Operations oversees the design, implementation, and analysis processes for all data collection initiatives at NAIS, including DASL, the Demographic Center, and the Survey Center.  He/she manages a team that also is responsible for data integrity, data standards and rules, and the identification of new collection and integration initiatives to meet the changing needs of the membership.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Provides vision for data collection and integration efforts at NAIS and ensures that methodologies implemented represent best practices in data management and use. Designs plans and processes for most effectively collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data, including strategies for ensuring complete data.
  • Manages, tracks, and reports on data collection performance and suggests strategies for improvement.
  • Develops and implements standards and requirements specific to the data collection operations. Ensures all data collection processes are well documented.
  • Identifies opportunities for integrating data from other sources, and leads the operationalization of those efforts.
  • Participates in the data collaboration efforts across associations, and translates the priorities of those collaborations into specific data collection and integration efforts at NAIS.
  • Identifies and implements opportunities to optimize the data collection processes and tools to improve customer service. 
  • Builds and manages the data collection budget and ensures all budgetary decisions are made to maximize funds.
  • Collaborates with other team members to ensure that all tools, databases, and systems used in the data collection efforts are the most appropriate for the job and operate with maximum efficiency, reliability, and usability.
  • Serves as the NAIS liaison to organizations focused on the use and exchange of data in today’s networked world.  Ensure that NAIS practices in this area align with industry standards.
  • Ability to travel occasionally during the year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, data management, or related field and experience in K-12 education is required (a Master’s degree and experience in independent schools is preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing large-scale data collections and/or integrations
  • Experience in primary data collection and data management
  • Experience in data integration across repositories
  • At least one year of experience with supervision.
  • Ability to clearly communicate data-related work and information for technical and lay audiences alike
  • Ability to listen, identify, analyze, and take ownership of user problems. Excellent customer service skills   
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently and as part of a team; to communicate regularly; and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; able to adapt and learn new software and web-based systems
  • Knowledge of large database platforms and web-based interfaces to those systems (preferred)
  • Proficiency in SPSS, SAS, STATA and/or other statistical reporting tools is desirable
  • Excellent research and analytical skills are desirable
