We are seeking a Data Engineer III to support lab operations in Pleasanton, California.

Information is a key resource. We generate genomic sequencing, High Throughput Screening assay and fermentation data. This position will work closely with lab scientists and Data Science to improve data capture and utilization. As part of a small team, they will improve and extend existing systems to maximize workflow efficiency in the lab, support interpretation of experiment results and machine learning/AI efforts and facilitate project tracking. The existing data ecosystem combines a commercial LIMS (Benchling) with apps running custom data pipelines in the cloud (AWS). The position requires constant communication and coordination with stakeholders and related software development efforts, using an Agile framework. Code must be robust; both well designed and tested for reliability in a production environment, yet flexible, extensible, and scalable to deal with continuous change in a dynamic, growing R&D-driven organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with lab automation engineers and bench scientists to streamline workflows, ensuring accurate and complete data capture.
  • Help bench scientists improve their efficiency and effectiveness by developing software that connects systems, to simplify and automate routine tasks.
  • Create visualizations and analysis interfaces to LIMS and other data stores that enable scientists to explore and understand experiment results.
  • Optimize data organization in the cloud to enable AI work; collaborate with data scientists on analysis pipelines.
  • Help maintain data integrity and security by following best practices for software development and data storage.

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience working in a fast-paced, team-oriented, biotech environment.
  • A degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science is preferred.
  • Highly flexible and a good team player, with strong communication skills, a commitment to documentation and a can-do attitude.
  • Demonstrated comfort with using Python to write clean, maintainable code, and with the modern
software dev stack (Git, Docker, virtual environments, app frameworks, etc.).
  • Experience with common AWS services (IAM, EC2, S3, Lambda, Batch, etc.), as well as relational
    databases (especially Postgres) is desirable.
  • Familiarity with plate-based biotech assay workflows is strongly preferred.
  • Benchling experience is not required but would be extremely valuable.
  • Experience with data engineering for bioinformatics pipelines is a plus.
  • While facility with these technologies is great, the desire to learn new tech and grow your skill set is probably more important!

Inscripta offers a competitive base salary, bonus plan, benefits package, 401k match and an attractive equity program to all team members. Starting salary range: $140,000 - $175,000 per year. This salary range is provided per current averages and expectations. The salary and job title for this opening will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience and may be outside this range.
